7 Mistakes That Will Mess Up Your Move-In Day
05.07.2021 |
Move-in day is an exciting day. You’ve chosen to live in a luxury apartment at The Pointe Brodie Creek and you’re going to love it!
But, if you aren’t prepared for the big move, your day could end in disaster.
Forgetting to pay your apartment fees, set up your electricity service, or hire a moving company are all common examples of mistakes people make that we want to help you avoid.
If you don’t want to mess up your move-in day, review this list of easy-to-make mistakes and take our advice on how to prevent them.
#1: Forgetting Your Application Fees
You can’t move into a new apartment before you finish applying for it!
Your apartment application will not be considered complete until you submit all your information and pay all your fees, including a $50 application fee, $150 administrative fee, and $150 security deposit.
To avoid making this mistake, double check that you have done everything on our application checklist.
#2: Assuming You Are Approved
Once you complete your application and send our leasing team everything they need to verify your information, it’s time to sit back and wait to see if you’re approved.
Usually, the approval process takes just a few business days. If you experience a delay on a decision from us, it most often means we are waiting to receive rental verifications from your current or previous landlord.
During this time, you can’t assume you will be approved and show up to our office ready to move in. We will always communicate next steps with you, so keep your phone nearby and regularly check your emails for updates.
Whether your application is approved or denied, the decision is final. If you feel the reasoning for a denied application is invalid, you can request to file a dispute with management.
#3: Passing on Preparing Your Rent Payment
As soon as your application is approved, you will receive a congratulatory email from our leasing team detailing everything you need to do in preparation for your move-in day. Make sure to read over this email in detail and let us know if you have any questions!
One mistake you might make is overlooking the amount you owe for your first month’s rent, plus any pet fees. Payment for this amount will be due on your move-in day, and we cannot let you enter your new apartment without it.
If your move-in date is not on the first day of the month, your first month’s rent will be a prorated amount to cover you from your move-in date through the end of the month.
If you qualify for our Preferred Employer Discount, the $50 application fee will already be credited towards your first month’s rent and removed from the amount you owe.
A personal check, cashier’s check, or money order are all acceptable forms of payment, or you can save $25 by signing up for automatic bank draft payments. Just make sure you have your account number and routing number ready to go!
#4: Neglecting to Sign on the Dotted Line
Up to 10 days prior to your move-in date, you will receive your lease paperwork electronically via an email from DocuSign. Don’t neglect reading it over and signing it!
Forgetting to sign on the dotted line is a common mistake people make, and we can’t give you keys until you do.
DocuSign makes it easy to review each page of your lease, Resident Handbook, and any additional addendums before you sign the documents electronically.
Once you do, our team will be notified to finalize your paperwork. Then, we will send you a digital copy via email, which will also be available for reference in your resident portal.
#5: Avoiding Setting Up an Entergy Account
By now, you know that our awesome utility package covers the cost of your cable, Internet, water, sewer, trash, pest control, and intrusion alarm. The only utility you pay separately is electricity!
Don’t delay setting up your Entergy account if you want to avoid messing up your move-in day. You must provide us with your account number before we can give you keys to your new home.
It’s very easy to set up an account and initiate service in your new apartment – just visit Entergy’s website or give them a call at 1-800-Entergy.
#6: Failing to Pack First
So, you’ve finished your application, gotten approved, prepared your rent payment, and set up your Entergy account. Now it’s time to do the real heavy lifting and pack up your life.
One of the biggest mistakes we see new residents make is waiting to pack until the last minute and failing to pack efficiently. Then, they end up missing their move-in day or forgetting what they need to bring because they didn’t plan ahead.
Moving is stressful enough. Please don’t do that to yourself!
Don’t forget to tell these fifteen people that you’re moving, too.
#7: Renting the Wrong Moving Truck
To avoid unnecessary stress and make your move more seamless, we highly recommend hiring a moving company or renting a moving truck.
But a big mistake some people make is failing to read our moving truck policy and renting or hiring the wrong kind!
Here are the rules you need to know for moving trucks:
- Trucks over 26 feet are not allowed to enter the property. They just won’t fit!
- Pods and similar moving systems must be placed in an area across from your apartment building, not directly in front of it. Additionally, they can only take up one parking space and are not allowed to be on the property over 24 hours.
- Trailers used to unload personal belongs may not remain on the property overnight.
All of this is explained via an email from our leasing team and inside our resident app. Go ahead and download our app so you will be ready to gain access on your move-in day!
